Mastering Feedback: How to Give It, How to Receive It


Feedback is like a compass—it points us in the right direction. But giving and receiving feedback isn’t always easy. Sometimes it stings, and other times, it just feels awkward. Yet, in mentoring and leadership, feedback is how we grow.

Why Feedback Matters

Feedback helps us see what we’re doing well and where we can improve. It’s not about pointing out flaws but about helping each other grow. In mentoring, feedback creates a two-way street where both mentor and mentee learn and improve together.


Giving Feedback: Do’s and Don’ts

How you give feedback can make all the difference. Here’s how to do it right:

  1. Be Specific, Not Vague: Instead of saying, “Great job,” say, “You did a great job organizing that meeting. Your clear agenda kept everyone on track.”

  2. Focus on Actions, Not the Person: Talk about what they did, not who they are. For example, “Your report needed more details” is better than “You’re not detailed enough.”

  3. Balance Positive and Constructive Feedback: Start with something positive, then move to areas for improvement. This keeps the conversation balanced and productive.


Receiving Feedback: A Growth Mindset

Receiving feedback can feel uncomfortable, but it’s an opportunity to grow. Here’s how to handle it:

  • Listen Fully: Avoid interrupting or getting defensive. Listen to understand, not to respond.

  • Ask for Examples: If feedback feels unclear, ask for specific examples to understand better.

  • Say Thank You: Feedback is a gift, even when it’s tough to hear. Thank the person for helping you grow.


Real-Life Example: Turning Feedback Into Growth

A young leader once received feedback that their presentations were confusing. At first, they felt hurt, but they chose to learn from it. They asked for examples, practiced simplifying their message, and even asked their mentor to review their slides. The result? Their next presentation was clear and impactful, earning praise from the team.
